Spec Racer Ford rental FAQ

License requirements, what a weekend costs, the deposit, what to bring, how booking works, whether you will fit, and storage. Ask the one we missed at the bottom.

License

License

Do I need a racing license to rent a Spec Racer Ford?

Not for a test day or a track day. Anyone with track experience can run those, and the calendar marks them "None." Time trials need a Time Trials license, a short online application with no racing school required. Wheel-to-wheel racing needs an SCCA competition license or a novice permit, and SVRA weekends take an SVRA vintage license or a current competition license plus a medical. The license column on the calendar tells you which is which for every event, and we will walk you through whichever one you need.

I have never driven on a race track. Where do I start?

A track day. No license, no competition, an instructor, and a Spec Racer Ford we can run lead-follow with another driver so you have something to chase. If you have been sim racing, that lead-follow lap is the real-world version of a ghost car. From there the path runs test day, time trial, novice permit, competition license, and we have walked a lot of people down it. See how the whole path fits together on Paths Into Racing.

I used to race and my license lapsed. Can you help me get it back?

Tell us when you last held a license and what you drove, and we will tell you what the sanctioning body wants for reinstatement and which of our events count as warm-ups before the weekend you actually care about.

I race the SRF on iRacing. Does it translate?

More than you would think. The car is the same shape, the tracks are the same tracks, and a lead-follow session on a track day is the sim's ghost car with the ground moving under you. What the sim cannot give you is the weight transfer, the heat and the other thirty cars, which is what the coaching is for.

Cost and the deposit

Cost and the deposit

What does a weekend cost?

A two-day track weekend at Barber, eight sessions and four hours on track on scuffed tires, runs around $4,500. Six lines make up the total: transport, prep, trackside support, tires, fuel and the car itself, each priced on its own, with tires and fuel estimated up front and settled on what you actually use. Transport and prep are charged once per event, so the second day costs less than the first. Race weekends are priced the same way and run higher because there are more days and more sessions. The rental pricing calculator builds your own number in a minute.

What is the $6,000 deposit, and when do I get it back?

A crash-damage deposit, paid before your first event along with the rental. We hold it for as long as you race with us, so it does not move back and forth each weekend, and return it when you are done. It is security against what you owe, not a limit on it. ACH or check carries no fee; a credit card adds a 3 percent convenience fee.

What counts as damage, and what does the deposit cover?

Damage you cause while the car is in your hands is yours to pay for: contact, an off-track excursion, an over-rev, abusive shifting, or driving on past a warning light. A mechanical failure that is not your fault is not yours, and some cases are shared; we walk through the cost and the cause with you, as a team, and explain it. Normal wear and maintenance are ours. If something is damaged, we repair it or have it repaired and bill the actual cost, including any freight, against your $6,000 crash deposit. The deposit is security, not a limit: the most you can owe is the entire car. What typical crashes actually cost.

Do I pay for tires?

You pay for the heat cycles you use. One session is one heat cycle. Pricing is based on the Spec Hoosier race tire, which we can get as many as 20 heat cycles out of, and the early cycles are worth the most, so a new set costs more per session than a scuffed one. The calculator shows both, and the invoice settles on the sessions you actually ran. For track days and non-SCCA events we also have Toyo R888R tires, which are harder and slightly treaded.

What if I have to cancel?

Our cancellation policy is 14 days. The rental and the deposit are paid before the event. If your plans change, tell us as soon as you know.

What to bring

What to bring

What do I bring?

Your helmet, a driving suit, gloves, shoes, arm restraints and a head-and-neck restraint, all rated to the sanctioning body's current rules (the exact ratings are in our safety gear guide), plus your entry fee, paid to the organizer when you register. If you do not have arm restraints or a head-and-neck restraint yet, we provide them. Some track days allow a helmet and no suit; we do not recommend it. Everything else, the car, the tools, the tires, the fuel, the trailer, the awning, is ours.

I do not own any gear. What does it cost, and will you tell me what to buy?

A full set of new gear can run up to $5,000. We will tell you what to buy and what to skip. We help people choose equipment as a matter of course, and we will talk you out of spending that does not improve safety, performance or the experience. For a first weekend we provide arm restraints and a head-and-neck restraint. Our buying safety gear guide has more.

Can I bring people?

Yes. Spouses, kids, friends, a client or two. The awning has room, and racing is better when the people who put up with it all week get to see what it is about.

Booking

Booking

How does booking work?

Pick a date on the race calendar and register with the organizer. Text us your dates and we confirm your spot and your itemized price. Then sign up with us (a short driver registration form and the rental agreement by DocuSign) and pay the rental and deposit before the event; our cancellation policy is 14 days. We also have an Intro to the Spec Racer binder: it is one way to learn the car and you are welcome to read ahead, but we walk you through everything, step by step, at the track.

How far ahead do I need to book?

Two weeks' notice is what we prefer. We prep every car as soon as it comes back from an event, so it is ready to go on short notice, but track-day registration fills up, so plan ahead to secure your spot with the organizer.

Which tracks do you go to?

Across the Southeast and further when the calendar calls for it: Barber, Road Atlanta, Sebring, Daytona, NCM, Roebling Road, Summit Point, VIR, Mid-Ohio, Road America, World Wide Technology Raceway, Ozarks International Raceway, COTA, and Polecat in Fayetteville, TN for test days. Interested in a NASA, SVRA or private test day that is not on the list? Ask, we add events on demand.

Do I have to buy a car eventually?

No. Renting with us carries no purchase and no season commitment. If you find yourself racing more than about six weekends a year, owning starts to make financial sense, and when that day comes we will help you find and inspect a used one. We know most of the cars in the Southeast. And if you plan a season with us, ask about multi-race discounts; they depend on the size of the commitment and the terms. Read more about how a weekend with us works.

Fit

Fit

Will I fit?

Probably. We have fitted a driver at 6'7" and 275 pounds. The seat, pedal rack and steering column all adjust, and an extended pedal set, a smaller wheel and a molded insert go further. Send five measurements on the fit-check page and a real person answers.

Storage

Storage

What does storage cost?

Indoor car storage from $200 a month with shop membership included. Outdoor storage is $60 a month for a trailer under 24 feet and $100 for a trailer over 24 feet. Shop membership on its own is $75 a month. Private long-term bays are coming, and the storage page takes your name for one.

Can I work on my own car there?

Yes. Membership means 24/7 access to the shop: a two-post lift, a Hunter alignment rack, scales and tools, with lifts by reservation. And when you reach your limit, ask. That is what member services is for.
