Spec Racer Ford crash damage · in the open
Spec Racer Ford crash damage: what it actually costs.
Almost nobody in this business publishes damage terms. Most say the driver is "responsible for damages" and stop there. We would rather you know before you book: who pays for what, the deposit, and how the repair of each incident we actually see is billed.
The deposit
$6,000, held while you race with us.
Damage you cause is yours to pay for. A mechanical failure that is not your fault is not, and the cases in between we work out with you, as a team, walking through the cost and the cause. The $6,000 crash deposit is paid before your first event and we hold it for as long as you race with us, so it does not move back and forth each weekend; it comes back when you are done. It is security against what you owe, not a limit on it: the most you can owe is the entire car. If something is damaged, we repair it or have it repaired and bill the actual cost, including any freight, against the deposit.

Common incidents
What we actually see, and how it is billed.
The Spec Racer is a sturdy, simple car built from one parts catalog, which keeps most repairs predictable. These are the incidents that make up most of our repair work, from the one that costs nothing to the one that costs the most.
| Incident | What usually breaks | How it is billed |
|---|---|---|
| Spin into the grass or gravel, no contact | Usually nothing; a clean-out and a check over | Usually nothing |
| Light contact with another car | Bodywork: nose or side pod, sometimes a mirror | Actual cost: parts at current published prices, materials at our cost plus shipping, labor at $120 an hour |
| Curb or wheel-to-wheel hit on a corner | A bent toe link or control arm, a wheel, an alignment | Actual cost: parts at current published prices, materials at our cost plus shipping, labor at $120 an hour |
| Over-rev from a missed downshift | Engine inspection; at worst, valvetrain or a sealed-engine rebuild | Actual cost: parts at current published prices, materials at our cost plus shipping, labor at $120 an hour |
| Off into the tire wall or barrier | Suspension corner, bodywork, possibly frame straightening | Actual cost: parts at current published prices, materials at our cost plus shipping, labor at $120 an hour |
How to keep it at zero
Most damage is avoidable, and the cheapest repair is the one that never happens. Read the Intro to the Spec Racer binder before your weekend: it covers start-up, the gearbox and over-rev, the mistakes that most often damage a car. Build up to the limit across a weekend rather than in the first session, and use the coaching between sessions.

We would rather talk it through now than after the session. The full terms are in the rental agreement, and the deposit and every other line are on the pricing page.
